Here's the full backstory to the video.
During my senior year of college, I lived in a house with 5 other guys. My sister, Carissa, was a freshman at the same college. One evening, Carissa and Kendra came to the house. Kendra was dating Jon so they went upstairs to his room. Carissa, myself, and a few others watched a movie (I think it was Oceans Eleven). During this movie, Mike was playing with a little video camera he had.
This camera was a small black cylinder about 1 inch in diameter and 5 inches long. It had a few inches of cable sticking out the back with an RCA connector on it. All you needed to do was hook it up to a TV. It put out a very clear black and white picture and needed minimal light to get a good picture. It could also see IR light. For a while, it was mounted under the TV. If you didn't know it was there, you wouldn't see it. It would upload a picture to a website every few minutes.
Anyway, Mike was mounting the camera to a long thin piece of wood. By the time we were done watching the movie, Mike had the camera attached to a board about the size of a yard stick - maybe a little longer. We hooked the camera up to the TV and watched some cool sweeping camera angles of the living room. Since the camera had about 60 feet of cable, someone started walking through the house with it while the rest of us watched a black and white tour of where we lived. When the camera was poked out the back door, we got an idea.
The plan was to take a couple more of these sticks and duct tape them together to make a longer stick. Then we could spy on Jon and Kendra from outside. We were slowed down when we remembered that the windows were covered with plastic to eliminate drafts. (The boards we mounted the camera to were left over from sealing the windows. It was winter when we filmed this, despite the lack of snow.) We soon remembered that for whatever reason, Jon's window wasn't covered. Someone took the camera-on-a-stick outside to do a little test. We were very happy to see the inside of his room on the TV. Test successful!
Mike already had a cable running from the TV downstairs to his room upstairs. We ran the camera through this cable to connect it to the tv tuner card on his computer. Now all video captured would be instantly encoded in divx and stored on his computer. We got it all going, which brings us to the start of the video.
When the video opens, you are looking in Mike's room. I am in there (kneeling and waving), along with Mike (to the right, sitting at the desk) and Carissa (to the left, sitting on Mike's bed). Phil is manning the camera, talking to Mike via cell phone. We had to be quiet, as Jon's room is right next door. Shortly after we started recording, we decided that audio would be nice, so we went and got a microphone and plugged it into the computer. That is why there is no audio for the first minute or two. When there is audio, you hear Mike, myself, and occasionally my sister. We are watching exactly what you are seeing as it is being recorded. We occasionally give Phil direction ("rotate left", "up a little", etc.) or make comments to each other. When you get the glimpse into Jon's room, Jon is laying on the bed and Kendra is sitting on the recliner to the left.
The rest pretty much speaks for itself. Then only 'post-production' work is that I ran the audio through a compressor to normalize the volume. Other than that, it is exacly as it was created. Enjoy.
